Josh Parrick - Evaluation

Target Audience Profile

Name:
Jude Frankum

Gender:
Male

Ethnicity and cultural background:
White, English

Age:
17

Favourite type of films:
Thriller

Why?:
I love thrillers because of the story lines that just get the blood pumping and keep you thinking at all times. I love this because of the way I constantly try to figure out the end before it's revealed the audience.

What needs to be in a film to grab your attention?:
There needs to be a mix of inventive story line and interesting characters that are relatable to everyday people because I believe that is what makes a 'Thriller' more thrilling if there are characters that the audience can relate to, so the audience is on the edge of their seat. There also needs to be an intriguing plot line but has to follow the basic thriller formula, but the more unsuspecting the twist the better.

What is your favourite media platform for movies?:

Netflix, Amazon prime instant video etc...

Why?:
Because it is far superior to the big cinemas such as Odeon, Cineworld and things like that because there is more chose on Netflix. It is also superior to going out to buy a DVD as it's easier, faster and cheaper. It also allows us to get a film whenever we want from the comfort of our own home, also where one film cost £10+ Netflix cost £6.00 a month for a wider range of films and such.

Photo montage:

The technology used to create this film opening was:

- A computer: So that we could use the editing software, Audio recording and storing clips and film edits.

- Adobe Premier Pro CS3: We used this to be able to edit our film together and render it.

- Audacity: We used this to record our voice over for our film.

- A Panasonic 3MO5 video camera: We used this to record our film.

- A memory stick: We used this to store our film and take it home to work on.

                                                                                    - VLC media player: We used this to create a
story board for our film by screen shotting
our own film and for making our nine frame
                                                                                     analysis.

9 Nine frame analysis (Scott pilgrim Vs  the world)

Location: This frame shows us where the events of the film will be taking place. This lays down the foundation for the film. By telling us that it is in Toronto, Canada lets us know what we will be expected to see in the film, E.G; Streets, Suburbs, Snow etc...

Genre: This gives us a hint at the genre of a romantic comedy because it wouldn't usually be important to the audience about the characters love life unless it was something to do with romance. But this challenges the conventions of a romantic comedy (rom-com's) because rom -com's tend to use happy music and fancy typeface's and focus on the colour red for love.

Characterization: This creates character because we get to see the characters face and also get some information about him. We get who he is 'Scott Pilgrim'. his age '22 years old' this also challenges the conventions of a rom-com because we would usually get an over voice from the main characters PoV allowing us to start to build a relationship with him/her, instead we get to see what he looks like and the little information about him. Once again challenges the rom-com's conventions, because we don't usually see this social group being in a rom-com, the social group being indie kids, the characters are usually Jocks and popular girls.

Sound: The sound in this film is clean, meaning that it is easy to hear. The main part of this film is digetic sound meaning that it's part of the characters world, however there are the sound effects of old arcade games that are non-digetic meaning that only the viewer can hear them. the video game sound effects are challenging the conventions of a rom-com because they don't usually have video games in a rom-com, we usually get pop music and birds singing.

Camera work: The camera work in this opening is fairly basic focusing of medium close up's and wide shots. This is a nice touch as it allows us to get a further understanding of Scott's life and what he does etc...  it allows reveals  more of the surroundings

Editing: The editing of this opening of this film is fairly basic with the straight cuts but there are a few jump cuts to move the film forward witch i personally think is a nice touch. When 'Sex-bob-omb' (Scott's band) are practicing we see little faded lighting bolt's around them. this is a nice touch because it allows the audience to get an idea of how loud it is.

Titles: these titles are fairly static. The colour of them changes depending on the background, so the contrast and stand out. The size of them is a fairly large size so they are readable to the audience and the person/people's title of what they did is smaller. The type face is fairly simple. This type face challenges the conventions of romantic comedy's because it isn't fancy and curvy.

Costume: The costume for this film is that hey are meant to be people in there early to mid 20's indie people. So the costume of the Band t-shirt the Scott is wearing and and the jeans really helps us to believe his age.

Dialogue: The dialogue in this opening is just standard chatting about Scott's new girlfriend. they just speak casual American.

Preliminary task and main task comparison:

9 Frame of my groups own film:

Location: For Location in our film as it is a post apocalyptic film we had to find the right area. we chose the locations shown in the film to get across that their just isn't that many people left around anymore and that there has been conflict we chose locations that looked damaged or abandoned.

Genre: The genre for our film was meant to be a post apocalyptic drama. we tried to get this across to the audience by the locations chosen, costume and costume. i think it is achieved well because of feed back.

Characterization: We tried to give of a sense that our character has been on the road for a while, and he hasn't had time to change because he always has to be alert. We have done this through his costume and make up. We did this by making his clothes all ratted and muddy, for his make up we made him look exhausted by putting lots of make up on his face around his eyes so it looks like bags.

Sound: For our production our sound was mainly music with a 22 second voice over. for the voice over we tried to give the character the effect that he was exhausted and tired as the same with our characterization, we did this with a muttering voice over. we found this to be a problem with our audience as they couldn't understand what they was saying...

Camera work: The camera work for our film was meant to resemble the film 'Children Of Men' witch has a lot of long takes so thats what we tried to do but when editing we had to cut it up so we could fit everything in within our time constants.

Editing: The editing for this film was very simple, it mainly reallies on straight cut's. as for sound editing it was harder because we had try make the voice as audible as possible and make sure the music was heard by the audience. But other than that the editing is standard stuff.

Titles: For our titles we also followed the ones from 'Children Of Men' so we went for a cut to black with the title and then cut back to the film sequence and so on and so

Costume: The costume for our production was that he has damaged and dirty clothes, he also had make up so it looks like he has bags. This has been done so it is believable that he has been on the run for a while and hasn't had much rest.

Dialogue: The Dialogue for our production is one voice over giving the audience background on what has happened to lead up to this. The dialogue is difficult to understand because it is muttered and has poor audio editing.

Social groups:

The social group for film isn't really shown very often as it is the drifter character. The character is from the film 'The Book Of Eli' there are some similarities between this character and our's. These similarities are that  they both are dressed in tattered clothes.  They both have have backpacks and a canteen. Also they are both are carrying weapons. We tried to get across the idea that he is one of the last people on earth through mise-en-scene. It is shown through how the way that our character is dressed as his clothing looks tatted. He is carrying a golf club so that he can defend himself this is similar to the character from the book of Eli, as they both carry weapons that is something someone would have in there house. The other way we try to get this point across is the way that it is empty around, the shot of the train bridge best communicates this because it's usually a busy part of town and the fact that it is empty really helps with that.

analysis of how we have tried to attract and address our audience:

There is no video for this as there was trouble with you tube's annotate function.
We tried to attract our audience by having a new and interesting story line for our film and we address them by  talking about how life is in england now and stuff like that. i think our attraction is better than the way we address the audience. i think we could have addressed the audience better if we had more time to show more and such.
